One of the underrated adjustments after leaving service is losing the built-in structure of mandatory PT. Fitness standards and unit runs disappear, and it's easy for physical activity to quietly slide down the priority list during a busy transition. A few habits tend to make the difference for veterans who stay in good shape long-term:
- Keep a fixed schedule, not a vague intention. Treat workouts like an appointment rather than something you'll get to.
- Prioritize protein and whole foods over convenience. Deployment or duty-driven eating habits (fast, dense, whatever's available) often need a deliberate reset in civilian life.
- Find a new "unit." A running group, a gym community, or a regular training partner replaces the built-in accountability that used to come from your squad.
- Get baseline health screenings done early as part of your VA healthcare enrollment, so you have a real starting point rather than guessing.
