Northern Thailand's largest city combines a genuinely low cost of living with modern healthcare infrastructure, a large expat community (including a fair number of U.S. military retirees), and a mountain-and-temple setting that's a world away from a typical American city.
For veterans drawing a fixed retirement or disability income, the appeal is straightforward: housing, healthcare, and daily living costs in Chiang Mai run a fraction of what they'd cost in most U.S. metro areas.
