In 2011, F-22 Raptor pilots began reporting hypoxia-like symptoms during flight, leading to a fleet-wide stand-down while the Air Force investigated. The issue drew significant attention within the fighter community and beyond, ultimately tracing back to problems with the aircraft's onboard oxygen generation system (OBOGS) and pressure vest configuration. The Air Force implemented modifications and updated procedures, and the F-22 fleet returned to full operational status in the years that followed.
It's a good reminder of how much trust aircrews place in systems they can't directly verify in the moment, and how seriously the services take it when that trust is shaken.
