An E-6 retiring at 20 years draws a modest pension by most measures — but "modest" is relative to where you spend it. In a genuinely low-cost location, whether overseas or in an affordable U.S. market, that same pension can fund a retirement most people would describe as comfortable, even a little enviable.

The formula is the same one that shows up across a lot of retirement planning content on this site: minimize fixed housing costs, pick a location with favorable tax treatment of retirement income, and be deliberate rather than default about where you land. It's less about the size of the pension and more about what you do with the decision that's actually in your control — location.
