Q. Who is eligible for TRICARE For Life [TFL]?
A. TRICARE For Life is for
Medicare-entitled uniformed services retirees,
Medicare-entitled retired guard members and reservists,
Medicare-entitled family members and widows/widowers
The medical benefits are known as TRICARE For Life [TFL] and the pharmacy benefits are part of the TRICARE Pharmacy Program.
The TRICARE Affirmation Act of 2010 states that TRICARE users are not subject to the penalty for lacking private health insurance in 2014.
TFL is a permanent program funded through the Department of Defense Medicare-Eligible Retiree Health Care Fund, resourced with general revenues of the U.S. Treasury and annual contributions from appropriations.
TRICARE For Life does not require annual authorization by Congress.
Under Federal law, if you are a TRICARE beneficiary entitled to Medicare because of age or disability, you must enroll and pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium in order to remain TRICARE-eligible.
If you are unsure about your TRICARE eligibility, contact the Defense Manpower Data Center Support [DMDC] Office to check your eligibility status in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System [DEERS].
